What next for politics in the UK? Is the South West leading the way? Local politics in Frome was transformed last year when a group of Independents took over their council. Bristol has elected independent George Ferguson as its first mayor. A panel including Frome Mayor Pippa Goldfinger, Bristol Mayor George Ferguson, and Jonathon Porritt, co-founder of the Ecology (now Green) Party, discuss the impact of operating outside the restrictions of political parties.
I have my reservations about George Feeguson, but this is interesting and indeed inspiring stuff nonetheless, if only because the very existence of these people so clearly demonstrates the voting public’s keenness to escape the closed loop of the Left vs. Right political discourse, and the interminable game of ping pong between the two parties associated with these poles.
